JETT dry eye treatment

JETT® — gentle, modern treatment for dry eyes

Dr. Valery Vinzent Wittwer

JETT® is a modern treatment method in which fine plasma energy is applied to the skin of the eyelids, the edge of the eyelids and the conjunctiva.

This energy works

  • anti-inflammatory
  • stimulates blood circulation
  • stimulates tissues and glands

The aim is to improve the function of the meibomian glands and to stabilize the tear film.

How exactly does the treatment work?

JETT® uses cold atmospheric plasma to produce reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNA), which leads to a modulation of cellular signaling pathways, superficial microablation.

As a result,

  • reduces keratinized layers on the edge of the eyelid
  • Glandular ducts cleared
  • improves secretion
  • increases local blood flow

Initial studies and clinical experience show an improvement in symptoms and high patient satisfaction, with effects often occurring after just a few weeks

How is the treatment going?

  • The treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis in the practice
  • The skin is cleansed, if necessary locally anesthetized
  • A special handheld device emits short plasma pulses onto the skin of the eyelid
  • Duration: approx. 10—20 minutes

As a rule, several sessions are required.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is usually used as:

  • slightly unpleasant
  • tingling or warm

Perceived, but is generally well tolerated.

How many treatments are required?

Typically:

  • 2-4 sessions a few weeks apart
  • Effects are often noticeable after the first treatment

The effects may last for several months.

What side effects can occur?

  • redness or swelling of the eyelids
  • temporary feeling of tightness
  • small crust formation

These symptoms usually subside within a few days.

What should be considered after treatment?

  • Do not rub eyelids
  • Use sunscreen
  • If necessary, apply nourishing ointments or drops
  • Make control appointments

Who is the treatment suitable for?

JETT® is particularly suitable for:

  • dry eye (Sicca syndrome)
  • meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Eyelid inflammation (blepharitis)

Limits of the method

JETT® is a relatively new therapy.

  • The results so far are promising
  • However, there are even fewer scientific studies than with established methods
  • Treatment does not always replace other therapies (e.g. eye drops)

Alternative treatments

Depending on the cause, other therapies may also be considered, such as:

  • artificial tears
  • Eyelid care
  • heat treatments
  • Light therapy (IPL)
