Various causes can lead to progressive corneal bulging
Dr. Valéry Vinzent Wittwer
Keratectasia is an increasing, pathological thinning and bulging of the cornea. Several causes can provoke keratectasia:
keratoconus and Pellucide Marginal Degeneration (PMD): As a result of genetic predisposition or increased rubbing against the eyes, the cornea becomes thinner, loses stability and increasingly bulges forward
Iatrogenic keratectasia: Improper laser eye surgery or radial keratotomies can increasingly destabilize the architecture of the cornea
The cross-linking treatment re-links the collagen fibers and thus solidifies them. As a result, stability increases and the progression of keratectasia can be halted.
